"When I Was Your Age..."

About 10 years ago, give or take 2 months, Daddy and I were camping at Smithville Lake with some friends. We stopped at a gas station on our way out of town to buy goodies, stock up on ice, and fill up the car with gas. For some reason, I remember what we paid. $.89 a gallon. Buying gas was never an issue then. At least I don't remember it to be.

This morning the girls and I went to the grocery store at.the.crack.of.dawn to pick up a few things after we took Daddy to work. I passed by the gas station, without my camera, and saw this:

$4.05 per gallon!
(Record Breaking For Our Location)

It's mind blowing and even though in a week the shock will have most likely passed, today I can't help but think that one day the girls are going to be grown and asking for gas money.

Teen Izzy: "Mom, we need money for gas to go [insert popular place, Year 2022]."

Mom: "Well, how full is your tank? Will $100.00 get you by?"

Teen Emmy: "Mom, Izzy's car's on Empty! $100.00 won't get us there and back!"

Mom: *Hands over numerous amounts of large bills*

Mom: "When your dad and I were younger and you two were just babies, we paid $4.05 a gallon and even then, THAT WAS A LOT OF MONEY! Be thankful we can [not] afford to let you go anywhere! You two should really consider getting jobs to fund the amount of gas you two spend driving aimlessly up and down the same street over and over...and over again."

Teen Emmy and Teen Izzy: "Geez Mom, those were the Stone Ages!"

With any luck, by the year 2022 we will all be flying around in air-powered ships.

Congratulations, It now costs me more than $75.00 to fill up my little 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder vehicle!

Thanks so much for the Must Read award. That is very specil to me! I will definitely acknowledge it on my site in the near future.

Your life sounds much like mine was some 30 years ago. At that time we were worried that gas was going to go up to $1.00, and we didn't know how we were going to manage that - and we only had one car! Very scary, isn't it?

Izzy sounds like a very fun little girl - they are so smart these days - I always wonder how the little girls know what they know. My kids were smart, too, but it seems like they are very world-aware these days. That's good and bad!

Thanks again, and come back soon!

AMEN SISTER!!! I put 50.00 in the van and got 1/2 a tank. It takes 60.00 to fill the honda. UGH. We cannot afford to do anything extra with gas and driving back and forth to work TO GET MORE MONEY FOR GAS!!!! Thanks again for the update on the site...it looks great.

It's rough, all right. So far Cliff and I haven't had to do without anything, but a person has to wonder where it all will end.

Yup! I remember when I started to complain that it cost $35, then $45 to fill our tank. Now it costs us almost $70. My husband commutes 60 miles per day.
